A suspect arrested in the shooting of two northeast Georgia police officers has been identified Tuesday. Authorities released an image of Khari Gordon, who is in custody in connection with Monday's shooting. Two Lavonia Police officers, Captain Michael Schulman and officer Jeffery Martin, were shot Monday evening during a traffic stop along Jones Road. Authorities say the officers were trying to pull over a vehicle along Jones Road, just off Interstate 85. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the vehicle eventually stopped at the Zaxby’s restaurant. That’s when investigators said the driver pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired upon officers, striking both. Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the officers did not return fire before the gunman fled the scene on foot.
Both officers were rushed to a hospital in Greenville, S.C. Police said both received non-life threatening injuries. The names of the two officers were not immediately known. Khari Anthony Dashaun Gordon, 22, of Greenville S.C., was taken into custody after a manhunt which lasted several hours, according the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation). Investigators said he was hiding in the woods. Gordon is being charged with two counts each of aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal attempt to commit murder. He is also being charged with a single count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Investigators said more charges are likely. Investigators said Gordon has a substantial criminal history, but did not go into details early Tuesday morning. Investigators said they will be processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses well into the morning.
